A real "Rare" bird this one,in fact it was in a class of it's own with it's unique Paxman Diesels, these of course were tuned to become the Engine of choice in the H.S.T. until a further power plant became ready around the turn of the century. The Valenta was one tough little engine there are no Diesels anywhere on the Planet designed to take the hammering these power plants took for thirty years in the stopping starting H.S.T.s "Remarkable"

Plymouth Friary men used to sign them and rated them more than the A1A's that usurped them, I know this to be true as I rostered ex-Friary men for ICXC. 70s were rare west of the Royal Albert Bridge though. Top machines and a top photo!

I knew Maurice for many years, having started my footplate career at Saltley, on November 12th 1973. He was a very good friend indeed and I still miss his company today. Maurice always had time for you. As a fellow Transport enthusiast, ( buses and trains etc ), Maurice and I would spend hours chatting in the messroom about the latest news. I also remember the M.I.C. trips abroad that Maurice organised, over the years, including the 1974 trip to Aachen, which I had the pleasure of taking part in. Thanks Maurice, a true Railwayman and friend. Mike ( Doris ) McClelland, D.I.A Chiltern Railways, 11th October 2009.

Saturday 25th September 1971. This is 5B45 08.40 OC - Padd ECS and then it worked 1B55 09.52 Padd - Newquay to Plymouth which 808 took forward. 7C01 was the 03.05 Acton - Severn Tunnel Junction which it worked on the 22nd. Then went to Avonmouth on freight and light to Bath Road. Worked to Plymouth overnight on 23rd and then on 24th went into Cornwall on Clay work. Came to London overnight on the St. Blazey - Acton and then on 25th worked 5B45 as seen here. Wrong headcode for 4 days!! The perils of identifying trains that were single manned!!

An educated guess here.... First time 820 worked a passenger train ex-works from Swindon in September 1971 to Paddington was Saturday 18th September when it worked 1B58 10.15 Paddington - Paignton. The headcode shown shows 6A17 which 820 worked the previous day, 15.05 Penzance - Paddington Perishables. The diagram was to work 5B55 09.05 ECS working from Old Oak into Paddington, arriving 09.25, before taking over 1B58.

Green liveried class 47 1676 Vulcan on freight. West end of Swindon station. The building behind was on the down platform and was demolished (as shown) in 1973-ish. The platform went as well, and all trains had to cross over to the former up platform. A new down platform was built a few years ago, putting it back to how it used to be!

These were the first 2 Hymeks to be withdrawn. Is the picture taken after that had happened, or are they together by co-incidence when still in service?

The LH Hymek shows 'B65' which was the 06.00 Worcester - Evesham - Honeybourne - Long Marston trip freight, returning to Worcester by 12.25 then it was 'Stand-by' loco. The picture would (I reckon) be dated around May / June 1971, on the 1st May 854 and 855 were treated to Silver buffers at the St. Blazey open day, the buffers look quite faded in this shot. Can anyone (with younger eyes than mine!) read the headcode on the 800?

I didn't know that Alex had passed on until I read the caption. Very sad news indeed. I'd always have a chat with Alex when he was the "grip" on the train - he was a true gentlemen. I remember being on his train once (from New Street to Watford) when we lost the TDM and came to a stand in Tring platform. Can't recall the loco number (think it might have been 86260) but we couldn't get the TDM to reconfigure so we had to run round. I said to Alex that I would do the hooking on and off. At first he wouldn't let me do it saying that it was his duty but when I insisted (and said that I wouldn't do this for every guard) he let me carry on. Every time I saw him after that run round he thanked me for doing the shunting for him that day. As I said, a real gent! RIP.
